Search Engine Optimisation unplugged episode 5
By Guy Mclaren
Links are the glue that holds the internet together. People will do just about anything for links back to their websites. Over the last week we have been talking about spinners. The reason for writing the same article 5 times using different terminology is so that you can get the back links. I have come to the conclusion that some ways of gaining backlinks are too much effort. The effort of writing an article, waiting for peers to grade it low and then only getting it published does not suit my impatient nature. To have articles remain unread because they appear among a whole pile of rubbish spun specifically to get backlinks and having no concern for readers does not suit my need for an audience. Today I decided to go back to Tumblr. Why Tumblr you may ask I am going to give you a long list of reasons. Interestingly enough I killed my own blog site recently transferring the traffic to another site that I am focusing on developing. I wanted to be part of a blogging community because the interaction is far more complex and interesting. In a few weeks I have already made a few connections in this place but the downside of the interaction here outweigh the upside. Tumblr.com is a mini blogging site that allows you to control your content and the links you make. I like sharing links, I like adding value to others blogs and in order to do that I want to add followed links to them. Tumblr allows me to do just that. If I write an article and I link to three sites I can pass on the Google juice. That is the objective of blogging, to share is it not? Next Tumblr.com allows me to choose a skin for my articles. There are amny to choose from and I heard a rumour that I can create my own if I so desire. I can also use my own domain if I so desire. I can link my own domain name to my Tumblr blog meaning that if I wanted to I could set up my guymclaren.com domain to point to and be the address for my Tumblr blog. Tumblr.com supplies you with a toolbar widget making it possible to highlight a little text on a page that I like adding a quote and a link from my Tumblr blog at the press of a button. Tumblr.com allows you to follow other bloggers and them to follow you. They can share your information in their blogs and you can reciprocate by sharing theirs at a the push of a button. Tumblr.com is known to ban spammers and spinners without any concerns. I heard the blokes from the 30 day challenge complaining because their spam had been deleted. There are other sites like squidoo.com that make you work harder for your back links and many other blogging platforms like wordpress.com, blogger.com and more. feel free to follow me at http://justsouthafrican.tumblr.com

Hi, Guy, I visited Tumblr but did not find any information about how the site works. There is more in your intel. Probably I will have to sign up for it - it seems a good alternative to Twitter. (Your middle web site link does not work, by the way - http://tip2top.tumblr.co.za/)

It fit's between Twitter and a real blog, although you can write some full blog stuff as well. You can do quotes, you can do blogs, you can add photos.
Guy, Sorry to see you go, but I understand. It seems that the only articles that get through the screening room are the ones with an American flag, currently take 6-7 hours or less sometimes. The others take forever, anywhere from 15 - 30 hours or more. Maybe us non-americans should stop rating theirs and only rate our own. What happened to being a global community in here? Good luck Guy and all the best. Rosemary

If I am to be graded then I would like to see some kind of sensibility. When spam gets graded as highly as good intel then there is none. I'd rather not be graded.
You have added many good articles and comments, Guy. I don't agree with some of your language, but I would rather have you stay then lose you. Life's judges aren't always fair, but we only lose, when we Quit. I hope that you will reconsider. Best to you. Frederick

Not quitting, changing the rules and the places.
Hi Guy, It's been nice reading your intels. I hope that you don't start a grand exodus. I like the format here and believe that it is as good as it gets (for free!) I joined Fortitude, paid my money, wrote an article and have been waiting 2 months for a review to go through. Talk about slow!!! Oops, not supposed to complain. Will miss you, Guy. Laraine
